Project: Orangery at The Grove, Cromer
In the first of our featured projects we look at The Grove, a wonderful old hotel, steeped in history and located in Cromer on the popular North Norfolk coast. The brief was to replace an existing conservatory and utilise the historic walls, creating an area where hotel guests could relax. Chris Graveling of The Grove explains how the project unfolded:
What inspired you to undertake this project?
“The project was inspired by the space that we weren't using effectively. We had a small conservatory, which was a walk-through room, it was a bit cold, a bit old, and when there was a storm, a little bit leaky. Outside the conservatory was a patio, which itself didn't get much sun. The whole area made a square surrounded by three external walls dating from different periods. The team from Morton came in and added a floor, bi-fold doors and roof with a huge glass lantern.”
Why did you chose Morton for the project?
“Morton won our tender based partially on a competitive cost, but also on professionalism. It's always good to work with a company who do not do things on the hop, but detail everything in writing so there are no nasty surprises.”
How did the completed project live up to expectation?
“The room works well. It shows off three exterior (now interior) walls dating from 1840s, 1790s and sometime long before that. The bi-folds continue the bar area into the garden, where we have outdoor seating. It's a fabulous place to much your way through an afternoon tea, or sit in the evening with a glass of wine. The roof lantern floods light into the room. We have had lots of guests comment on how successfully integrated it is. It has really benefited The Grove in many more ways than we imagined. It was also great that it came in on budget!”
